NEW customers were given a concise review of the many solutions
that were introduces throughout the year by NEW
Marketing Services. The annual meeting which is held annually
in December provides a summary of the many new products
and services which have been added
to the ever increasing list of NEW Solutions. Looking forward
to the presentations for the New Year 2003, customers requested
that NEW add more “training seminars,” “OSHA
compliance information” and “safety related” products and
services to the solutions list.
Square
D Brand Reaches 100 Year Milestone - According to a company
release, McBride Manufacturing was founded by Bryson Horton
and James McCarthy, in Detroit, in December 15, 1902. The
McBride enterprise had by 1915 become the Detroit Fuse and
Manufacturing Co. In that year, the company put an embossed
letter "D" within a square border on its cast-iron
enclosed safety switch. The D stood for Detroit and, soon
after, customers began asking for the "Square D"
switch.
"Very
few brands that have been around for 100 years can claim that
they meet the same essential needs of society as when they
began," said Chris Richardson, pres/CEO of Schneider
Electric's North American division.

they use. The product is inter-mate-able with the other leading
manufacturers’ products and carries the UL
listing.

Bodine
Introduces the ARC Keeper® HID Backup Ballast - The
new HID backup ballast offers breakthrough technology for
metal halide HID lighting systems. The ballast maintains the
lamp arc during AC power sags, interruptions or failures that
often create problems for the lamp.
The
Bodine UL-Listed ARC
Keeper® detects line disturbances and assumes control
of the arc – all within approximately two milliseconds! The
device then supplies power to the lamp for up to two minutes
or until normal or backup power is in place. Two minutes is
ample time for an auxiliary generator to respond and support
the lamp for emergency lighting purposes.
OSHA
Withdraws Fast-Track Road Rules Proposal - The U.S. Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
has withdrawn a fast-track proposal for new rules governing
construction operations around streets and highways. The National
Electrical Contractors Association (NECA)
and other construction industry organizations objected to
the proposal because of its rapid timetable. The compressed
schedule provided insufficient time for NECA
to inform and educate their members about the new safety regulations,
and to obtain new signs, barricades and other equipment required
for compliance. The new rules could also have put construction
contractors in violation of OSHA standards on projects that
had already been planned and budgeted without knowledge of
the proposed new rule.

- In an open letter printed in the October 2002 issue of
Consulting-Specifying

CEO John Grau expressed concerns and encouraged opposition
to the International Code Council's (ICC) ICC
Electrical Code. Quotes from his letter
include:
"The
electrical industry strongly opposes the International Code
Council building codes and the ICC Electrical Code, in particular.
The ICC is a non-electrical organization attempting to write
wiring rules that compete with the accepted safety standard
for the last century the NEC. We cannot allow this to happen."

California
Governor signs legislation establishing "California Renewables
Portfolio Standard Program."
- Beginning January 1, 2003, utilities in California must
increase their purchases of so-called "green power" at a rate
of 1 percent a year. By 2017, at least 20 percent of the power
they procure must come from sources other than natural gas
or large, hydro-power facilities.
The
legislation puts California in a class with a dozen other
states that have adopted similar standards.
California gets 12 percent of its electricity from renewable
sources, six times the national average of two percent. The
standards will aid the development of the stateâs well-established
wind and solar industries, as well as other renewables, such
biomass and geothermal.

CPSC, Greenlee Textron Inc. Announce Recall of Electrical
Testing Meters - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission (CPSC),
Greenlee Textron, Inc. (Greenlee),
of Rockford, Ill., is voluntarily recalling about 650 electrical
testing meters. The
recall involves certain CM-700 and CM-750 electrical meters
that are used to measure voltage and current of electric-powered
equipment. An incompatible grommet, located in the battery
compartment to protect internal wires, can cause the meter
to provide inaccurate voltage and current readings. A meter
that inaccurately indicates zero voltage or current creates
the potential for electric shock or an electrocution hazard
from the equipment being tested.

the International Brotherhood

The IBEW is opposed to

The IBEW, along with the National

exists, and moreover, the creation of the EST occupational
title will hurt certain groups of labor and consumers in general.
